The project involved deepening Shaft III from 856 to 1,053 meters and modernizing the mining hoists in the eastern and western sections, which now serve the new level 1,000. The work carried out since 2020 by the consortium of PBSz SA and PPG ROW-JAS required exceptional precision and coordination.
- Deepening the shaft while simultaneously operating levels 705 and 830 was an enormous challenge. Thanks to the use of the so-called artificial bottom, we were able to safely continue our work without disrupting the daily operations of the mine - emphasizes Przemysław Grinig, chief mechanic of shaft, hoisting and surface transport equipment at the Pniówek mine.
Shaft III, with a diameter of 7.5 meters, serves as an exhaust and transport shaft. It removes air from the mine areas and at the same time enables miners to descend and transport materials. Thanks to the investment, it currently serves three levels: 705, 830 and the newly commissioned 1000, which has become the main level. Already today, 60 per cent of the workforce starts work at this level.
The implementation of the project has brought many benefits. The commissioning of level 1000 eliminated the need to transport materials from level 830, which directly improved safety and work efficiency. The new three-story shaft cage can carry 78 people at a time, and the modernization of the hoisting machinery and replacement of the load-bearing and compensating ropes has adapted the infrastructure to work with heavier loads. In addition, ventilation has been improved, resulting in better working conditions underground.
- The completion of work related to the deepening and extension of the mining shafts of Shaft III is a breakthrough stage in the development of the mine. Thanks to this, the mine gains increased safety and comfort for its workers, improved logistics and transport, as well as stable operation for years to come - emphasizes Michał Szypuła, chief investment engineer at the Pniówek mine.
It is worth remembering that the smooth operation of the shafts is ensured on a daily basis by the employees of the shaft and hoisting equipment department. That's over 160 people. They are responsible for, among other things, day-to-day tasks, maintenance, repairs and equipment inspections.
- I am delighted and would like to congratulate the entire team on the completion of the investment. I am proud of the professionalism and commitment of all employees and partners who contributed to the implementation of this demanding project. You have demonstrated that we are capable of meeting the greatest challenges - concluded Adam Rozmus, JSW Vice-President for Technical and Operational Matters.
