Jastrzębie Agreement - a breakthrough in the fight for workers' rights

On 3 September 1980, one of the most important August Agreements - the Jastrzębie Agreement - was signed in Jastrzębie-Zdrój. It was a moment that changed Polish history forever, strengthening the struggle for workers' rights and becoming a symbol of opposition to communist rule. On the 45th anniversary of these events, flowers were laid in front of the monument by representatives of the JSW Supervisory Board and Management Board.

Striking miners from the former Manifest Lipcowy (today's Zofiówka) mine supported the demands from Gdańsk and Szczecin, and enforced their own postulates for improving working conditions in the mines. It was thanks to them that, among other things, free Saturdays and Sundays were introduced, the four-shift work system was abolished, voluntary work on holidays was guaranteed and wages were linked to the cost of living. The determination of the miners made the voice of the working people of Silesia resound exceptionally loudly, and the authorities had to give way in the face of the unity and courage of the workers.

The rights won then were the beginning of a great change, the effects of which are still being felt today. Therefore, as every year, a ceremony was held in front of the monument commemorating this historic event. Flowers were laid in front of the Jastrzębie Agreement monument by, among others, representatives of the Supervisory Board and Management Board of Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa, mine management, representatives of trade unions, participants in the 1980 strike, and signatories of the agreement.
