Contract for the construction of a power unit at the Radlin Coking Plant signed

On 12 June this year in Radlin, JSW KOKS S.A. (JSW Group) signed a contract with RAFAKO S.A. for the construction of a co-generation power unit with the capacity of 28 MWe and 37 MWt, fired by coke oven gas.

The total construction cost will be PLN 289 million. The investor intends to finance 70% of the construction project with external sources, including a loan granted by NFOŚiGW from EU funds and a loan granted by EIB.

The completion deadline was set at 29 months, starting from June this year. The new unit will be commissioned for use in Q4 2021.

The investment project will include two steam boilers with the total capacity of approximately 104 MWt, installation of a 28 MWe extraction-condensing steam turbine, a 37 MWt thermal unit and also auxiliary installations – said Mariusz Soszyński, member of the JSW KOKS S.A. management board in charge of production and technology.  – The primary energy source for the unit will be the surplus coke oven gas – approximately 180 million cubic meters annually.

The investor assumes that it would produce approximately 486 thous. GJ of steam for industrial processes and about 209 thous. GJ of heating water as well as 196 thous. MWh of electricity. The production will satisfy the coke plant’s own needs and also supply external buyers, including the city of Radlin and the Marcel Mine, with heating water.

Iwona Gajdzik-Szot, member of the JSW KOKS S.A. Management Board in charge of finance emphasized the importance of this project in increasing the economic efficiency of the coke plant’s production process and for the environment. – Our own production from coke oven gas that was previously wasted, will allow us to eliminate reliance on external suppliers, which is very important in the context of certainty of power supply.

It is worth noting that construction of the co-generation power unit in Radlin was included in the Program for Silesia and is the key part of an ambitious plan of modernizing the Radlin coke plant, which includes many other important investment tasks.

The fact that a Polish company with a long history in Silesia will execute a modern installation for another company from the same land is a source of great joy and pride to us that our competence is appreciated – said Jerzy Wiśniewski, President of the RAFAKO S.A. Management Board. - The solutions that we apply in RAFAKO prove that the power sector that is directly or indirectly based on coal does not have to be a burden on the environment.
