JKH GKS Jastrzębie wins the Polish Super Cup

JKH GKS Jastrzębie earned its first trophy of the 2020/2021 season. Last Tuesday night, the team defeated GKS Tychy 3–2 at the Winter Stadium after a brilliant and very dynamic game. This means that yet another prestigious cup will be proudly displayed in the Jastor arena.

Already the first period made it clear to the spectators that neither team were willing to play it weak. However, the first score of the game came only in the last minute of the first period when, after an intricate attack led by Christian Mroczkowski and Jason Seed, Alex Szczechura defeated Patrik Nechvatal with a one-touch shot on the goal. Soon thereafter, Olaf Bizacki was sent off to the penalty box for four minutes, but neither in the remaining time of the first period nor at the beginning of the second period did the Jastrzębie manage to score a tying goal. Actually, Szczechura may have even increased the home team’s lead during their player’s penalty time, but he missed the opportunity in a one-on-one encounter with Patrik Nechvatal.

Thus, nothing heralded a change in the score to the Jastrzębie side’s favor, but a moment later... a wonderful performance began! Those were several outstanding minutes that reversed the fate of the game and proved decisive in ensuring the victory of JKH GKS at the Winter Stadium. First, in the 25th minute, after a long-distance power shot from Mateusz Bryk, Łukasz Nalewajka deflected the puck and confused John Murray. Three minutes later, Zack Phillips made a brilliant pass to Jiri Klimicek, giving him a clear line of shot. The Stonemason saved his shot but was helpless against Maciej Urbanowicz’s rebound strike. Even though some thirty seconds later our defenders failed to keep an eye on Bartłomiej Jeziorski, they did not lose heart and continued their offense. This resulted in another score in the 34th minute when, following Dominik Jarosz’s successful face-off, Jakub Michałowski hit the puck from near the blue line, the shot was then deflected by Radosław Nalewajka and again confused Murray.

The score of 3–2 in favor of JKH GKS Jastrzębie did not change until the end of the game (even despite a four-minute penalty for Dominik Pasio for the unlucky “high stick” on Peter Novajovsky), which was largely due to the brilliant performance by Patrik Nechvatal. The Czech goalie made no mistakes, saving the team in a one-on-one situation against Szymon Marzec, who in the 54th minute may have taken advantage of the mistake made by the Jastrzębie team during their opponents’ power play. At the end of the game, Krzysztof Majkowski put it all on the line but was unable to change the final score.

Thus, the players of JKH GKS Jastrzębie won the Polish Super Cup, not only having repaid the Tychy side for their Sunday defeat in a league game but also for their last year’s loss in the Jastor arena in the game for... the Polish Super Cup.

Thank you for our emotions! Thank you for your passion! Thank you for your fight! This is how HISTORY is made and we are again seeing it with our own eyes courtesy of Robert Kalaber’s players!
