Anniversary of the disaster at the Zofiówka Section

The ten victims of the mining disaster at the Zofiówka Section that occurred on 23 April 2022 were commemorated today. The accident was caused by a high-energy shock wave combined with a methane outburst.

Flowers were laid and candles were lit in front of a plaque commemorating the disaster victims in the pithead of the Zofiówka Section. The modest ceremony was attended by Tomasz Cudny, President of the JSW Management Board, as well as mine directors, representatives of trade unions and families of the deceased miners.

At the Borynia-Zofiówka-Bzie mine, Zofiówka Section, a high-energy shock wave combined with an intensive outburst of methane occurred at the D4a face on the 900 level. There were 52 miners in the area of the accident. 42 of them got out on their own and contact with 10 others was lost. As it turned out in the following hours of the rescue operation - all of them died. The rescue operation lasted four days.
