Distinction in the “Modernization of the Year 2017” competition

Last Friday, finalists of the 22nd “Modernization of the Year” competition received awards and distinctions during a ceremony held in the Grand Hall of the Royal Castle in Warsaw. Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa received a distinction in the industrial and engineering facilities category for building a “CHP system with 2 x 4 MWe generators fuelled with methane removed from the Budryk mine.

The electricity generated in this way satisfies one third of the mine’s total energy needs. The electricity generation process produces heat, which will be used in the future to produce cold to improve the climate conditions underground in the mine. Implementation of this project had an additional effect of reducting methane emissions to the atmosphere. The task based on the use of methane fits perfectly into JSW’s strategy, which calls for independence from external energy suppliers.

The “Modernization of the Year” competition covers twelve areas of the construction industry focusing on residential, educational, cultural, sports, health and recreation, road, industrial and engineering, interiors, revitalizations, etc. projects. The idea behind the competition is to promote ambitious, enthusiastic people who want to change their surroundings for the better. The competition is open not only to individuals but also to chambers, counties, municipal offices, institutions and developers. Every year, the competition promotes and awards the best construction projects distinguished by special values.
