2018

We strive to reduce our impact on the natural surroundings through land rehabilitation and damage rectification programs as well as technological progress and innovations. We are proving that initiatives intended to reduce the emission of harmful gases into the atmosphere are not merely a response to regulatory changes but also a path towards new business and new revenue. The economic use of methane from mines is our flagship initiative.

JSW 4.0

Application of the latest technologies, automation, digitalisation, digital connectivity, robotisation are some of the key industry 4.0 trends that are aligned with our company’s development. By implementing innovations, we will be able to considerably reduce production costs, increase productivity and raise the level of safety, including through the use of real-time monitoring of threats as well as the locations of people, equipment and deposits.

We are standing before numerous challenges but we want to draw on global technological solutions that will bring JSW closer to being a mine of the future.

Artur Dyczko Vice-President of the Management Board for Strategy and Development

Deposit modelling and production planning at JSW

An innovative project being developed in cooperation with JSW IT Systems (Advicom).

Autonomous bolt support structures

The project aims to develop technology for conducting mining operations using bolting in a continuous extracting and support structure system, appropriate to the conditions of autonomous bolt support structures.

IMR-AR/ MASK

This project aims to develop a modern rescue mask using augmented reality technologies that allows rescuers to work in zero-visibility conditions. A set of cameras with different spectral ranges, supported by ultrasonic technologies, will make observations possible and provide data to a computing system, which following a data merge will display an image via transparent glasses inside the rescue mask.

Development of technology for producing carbon adsorbents and technology to remove mercury from exhaust gases

Carbon sorbents produced at the new facility in Dębieńsko will be used in processes for treating water and filtering out exhaust gases (mainly to remove mercury and its compounds). Useful carbon adsorbents will be produced at the new facility predominantly using JSW Group’s raw materials (type 34.2 hard coal coke dust).

Mechanised roadway complex for drilling roadway excavations in deep coal and mineral mines

Implementing the solution created in this project should mainly lead to an increase in the efficiency of drilling underground roadway excavations, increase in production capacities, increase in the profitability of underground work and elimination of limitations in drilling excavations by a roadheader due to mining conditions.

Separating high-quality hydrogen from coke oven gas available at JSW Group’s coking plants

JSW Innowacje is in the process of acquiring foreign technology for the separation of hydrogen from coke oven gas (from Germany, China, Japan). At the same time, JSW Innowacje has begun work with a domestic supplier of hydrogen separation technology in order to prepare assumptions to build a pilot installation. This is aimed at developing technology for separating hydrogen from coke oven gas and obtaining own domestic know-how for this technology.

How we create value

model-jsw-en

With the publication of this report, Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa joins the elite club of companies reporting their results in an integrated manner.

This is a response to the needs of our stakeholders, who expect from us a depiction of our business that goes beyond merely presenting operating and financial indicators.

Radosław Załoziński Vice-President of the Management Board for Economy

We are basing our development on good, long-term and trust-based relations with customers, utilising all of our strong suites – raw material quality, strategic location at the heart of the European metallurgical industry and access to transport infrastructure, mainly rail.

We operate on a competitive market alongside global players. We outperform them with our flexibility, the ability to adapt product parameters to customer needs and reliability, which has been verified over our long history.

Believing in the perspectives and future of coal, we are creating conditions for innovating in the production and use of this resource. We are using our own resources, i.e. our employees’ knowledge, and we are cooperating with external entities – mainly scientific centres and mining-related companies.

Our systemic approach to R&D is manifested through the formation of JSW Innowacje and our involvement in promising development directions such as acquisition of hydrogen for coke oven gas.

Harmful factors and threats to the health and life of our employees are an inherent part of mining. We prioritise our employees’ safety over production volumes or economic results.

Thanks to systemic solutions for managing occupational health and safety, we are seeing success in reducing the number of accidents and eliminating mining-related diseases. This is possible due to education, health prevention, extensive training system as well as investments and innovations focused on production automation.

December 2018 marked the first full year in which JSW Group’s Code of Ethics was in place. This is a signpost on the road towards building a uniform organisational culture that effectively regulates issues such as respecting company assets, third-party property, mutual respect and eliminating any instances of discrimination, harassment and violations of employee rights.

One of the first steps implementing the Code was to streamline human resource management structures and implement transparent recruitment rules.

We are aware of the fact that the natural resources we use are depletable and non-renewable. We must respect them and use them rationally, while eliminating imperfections in management and developing and implementing new technological solutions.

The innovations that the Group is implementing focus on the acquisition of coal from thin deposits, capture and use of methane resources (e.g. to produce electricity) and use of coke oven gas to produce hydrogen.

We apply the highest standards and best practices in transparency and corporate governance. We are implementing solutions related to ethics management and responsibility within supply chain management.

This enhances our credibility amongst business partners and investors. As a WSE-listed company, we are introducing the highest standards in reporting, including financial and non-financial reporting.

Our aim is to equally prioritise the maximisation of economic efficiency in using natural resources and reduction in the negative impact of extractive and coking activities on the environment and local communities.

We are improving the mining damage rectification system, pursuing ambitious projects in post-mining land rehabilitation and development, protecting surface waters and implementing innovations reducing emissions through the commercial use of methane and coke oven gas.
