Strategy implementation in 2021

Key initiatives supporting the strategic targets in 2021:

Coal segment:

  • Construction of level 1120m at KWK Borynia-Zofiówka Ruch Borynia
  • Construction of level 1080m at KWK Borynia-Zofiówka Ruch Zofiówka
  • Access and industrial use of hard coal resources within the deposits: "Bzie-Dębina 2-Zachód" and "Bzie-Dębina 1-Zachód" at KWK Jastrzębie-Bzie
  • Construction of level 1050m at KWK Knurów-Szczygłowice Ruch Knurów
  • Construction of level 1050m at KWK Knurów-Szczygłowice Ruch Szczygłowice
  • Expansion of level 1290m at KWK Budryk
  • Access of seams 405/1 and 405/2 at mine KWK Budryk
  • Expansion of level 1000m and deepening of shafts IV (work completed in September 2021) and III at KWK Pniówek
  • Expansion of mine KWK Pniówek by accessing and industrially managing resources in the Pawłowice 1 deposit

Coke segment:

  • Modernisation of coke oven battery 4 at Koksownia Przyjaźń
  • Construction of power-generation unit fuelled by coke oven gas at Koksownia Radlin

Other segments:

  • Modernisation of mechanical coal processing facilities to increase coking coal yield at KWK Budryk and KWK Knurów-Szczygłowice
  • Commercial use of methane at KWK Budryk and KWK Knurów-Szczygłowice Ruch Knurów and Ruch Szczygłowice

The Group is in a continuous process of optimising its operations and improving efficiency in its core business areas. These activities are adapted to the changing environment and take on different dimensions depending on which business cycle the Group is in. The activities are aimed not only at improving performance indicators, but also at preparing for economic downturns. Various actions taken by the Group aim to optimise coal production costs. Among these are the key components of the Effectiveness Program:

  • Research project aimed at disseminating mechanical lining and anchoring technology in mine workings.
  • Implementation of self-propelled bolter lining technology by the Bolter Miner to increase the progress of walkway excavations, improve work safety and speed up the accessing of key mining plots.
  • Implementation of projects related to improving the efficiency of underground transport.

Construction of a mine in the Bzie-Dębina deposit area - KWK Jastrzębie-Bzie

The on-going investment is aimed at increasing JSW's resource base by increasing coking coal production. Extractable resources in the Bzie-Dębina 2 - Zachód and Bzie-Dębina 1 - Zachód to the depth of 1300m are estimated at approx. 181.0 mt.

The following projects have been completed as part of this initiative:

  • development of technical and economic assumptions for KWK Jastrzębie-Bzie, deposits Bzie-Dębina 1-Zachód and 2-Zachód. This project contains recommendations that are the result of a comprehensive, multi-dimensional analysis of the possibility and feasibility of solutions in the process of accessing the Bzie-Dębina deposits 1-Zachód and 2-Zachód,
  • Electrification of level 1110 m - sub-shaft - KWK Jastrzębie-Bzie. This project has ensured the supply of electricity to machinery and mining equipment operating in underground mine workings.

Actions taken as part of the expansion of KWK Jastrzębie-Bzie are intended to make it possible, inter alia, to prepare the 1110m level for operation with the 1 Bzie shaft in terms of transporting people and materials. At the same time, an environmental impact report was drafted and sent to the Regional Director of Environmental Protection in order to obtain an environmental decision for the Bzie-Dębina 1-Zachód deposit - enabling full use of the concession secured for this deposit. The report is currently being processed.

Modernisation of mechanical coal processing facilities

Projects being implemented at KWK Knurów-Szczygłowice and KWK Budryk, where one of the objectives is to continue the QUALITY Program. Actions intended to achieve a higher output of coking coal are also being taken. The end result is expected to:

  • increase the production of coking coal, mainly type 34 and type 35, at KWK Budryk and KWK Knurów-Szczygłowice
  • increase the share of coking coal in JSW's overall output, eventually to more than 85%.

In May 2021, a final acceptance protocol was signed for the last task carried out as part of the investment at the KWK Knurów-Szczygłowice Ruch Knurów. This marked the completion of investment projects concerning the modernisation of the mechanical coal processing facility at the Knurów-Szczygłowice mine as part of the implementation of the project in question. Modernisation works continued in 2021 at the mechanical coal processing facility in KWK Budryk.
