Pro-social activities

In 2017 the Group conducted promotional and pro-social activity in the region, not only compensating possible inconveniences of mining activity but also consolidating the friendly attitudes of the community towards the Group. In an effort to be a good neighbor to the communities to which the Group has for years been inseparably linked, it is precisely on those communities that the Group focuses its pro-social activity. In 2017 cooperation continued with professional sports clubs: KS Jastrzębski Węgiel and Jastrzębie Hockey Club GKS Jastrzębie as well as numerous amateur clubs in various sports, including football, volleyball, hockey, table tennis, chess, box. The cooperation also covered associations, municipal culture centers, as well as the Association of Mining Traditions in the Mining and Geology Department of the Silesian University of Technology – particularly important in terms of cultivating the memory of the past.

At the same time the Parent Company made donations to 18 health care units and it supported purchase of coal for and organization of care for the poorest inhabitants. It supported local catholic parishes and the evangelic parish, which among other thanks to the aid from JSW is able to organize annual organ music concerts. Donations were also received by other organizations, including commonly known ones such as: Polish Red Cross, Polish Association of the Blind, Polish Association of Pensioners, Caritas Poland, Abstinent Clubs, Aid for Special Care Children Foundation, a hospice and many other. The list of beneficiaries also included smaller local clubs and non-governmental organizations, including student sports clubs, popular sports clubs, volunteer fire brigades, Polish Fishing Association and other organizations working with children and youth. Throughout the year JSW also assists St. Dominic Savio Children’s Home in Jastrzębie-Zdrój. Apart from financial aid to organize Christmas Eve supper or Easter breakfast and co-funding of day-care activities for children during holidays, before Christmas JSW employees organize z collection of gifts, including toys, school supplies, sweets, for the most needy children. Every year JSW employees also support the Noble Package action – nationwide initiative uniting Poles in the gesture of helping others.

JSW and IPA Branch in Jastrzębie-Zdrój support the program “Safe road to school” and “Safe road home”- several thousand fluorescent bands were produced for that purpose. For a few years now JSW has also conducted the action “Chess for Kindergarten Children”, thanks to which several hundred school chess sets were given to schools. JSW also participated in a supraregional event organized by the Chancellery of the Prime Minister on the occasion of the Children’s Day in Warsaw, providing for that purpose gadgets promoting safety of children, e.g. fluorescent T-shits reading “Can you see me?”, fluorescent bands, etc.

For the first time in JSW almost a thousand children of mine personnel attended St. Nicolas Day events organized by the company in all JSW plants. At the end of each meeting there was a lottery with the main prize in the form of family holiday in the JSK center (JSW Group) Jastrzębia Turnia in Zakopane.

Each company, due to different specific characteristics of its operations also has its individual way of community impact and thereby individual approach to its management:

  • JSW KOKS

    In JSW KOKS formalized approach aims not only at meeting the needs of the immediate community and environment. It takes into account also the procedure in the event of reports and complaints from representatives of local communities concerning impact on the life and natural environment of persons living in the vicinity of production plants. At the same time, it should be remembered that the key responsibility towards broadly understood society is the delivery by JSW KOKS of products with appropriate quality parameters, which in turn translates into e.g. obtaining of steel with determined parameters by coke consumers, that is steelworks. The Integrated Management Systems include the functioning Environment Management Systems, whose primary goal is to mitigate adverse effects on the environment caused by identified aspects. These actions directly influence local communities, since they enable informed decisions concerning the environment, resulting directly from production processes and enable lasting and correct relations with stakeholders, among whom local community plays a major role. Moreover, an important aspect of JSW KOKS operations is the production and sale of electrical energy, which allows efficient use and consumption of energy resources and ensures energy security in the processes of JSW KOKS as well as increases own energy resources in the JSW Group. Pro-social activity of JSW KOKS in 2017 focused on helping the poorest – the company supported financially actions organized by parishes and foundations which prepared food parcels for those in need. JSW KOKS was also involved in actions aimed to help in the treatment of people and in purchasing medical equipment, the company also supported hospice activity. In 2017 the company co-organized family picnics on the occasion of Children’s Day and St. Nicolas Day meetings for children. The company also participated in charitable events (e.g. organized by associations for people with disabilities and socially excluded). In 2017 the company also supported sport among children and youth (Górnik Zabrze Football Academy), as well as among adults who practice sport professionally (Jastrzębski Węgiel) or as a hobby.

  • PGWiR

    PGWiR manages on its own social risks specific to the company’s activity – it holds talks with the local population concerning the presence of infrastructure on their land, or compensation for possible failures and minor leakages from the pipeline. In the event of intense rainfall PGWiR is responsible for safe pumping away of water from mining areas, which also translates into rain water removal from flooded roads and supporting water removal from households.

  • JZR

    For JZR it is of key importance in terms of public interest to ensure the highest diligence and the highest quality of performed works to safeguard user safety. The company supports a series of pro-social activities, supporting sports, cultural and pro-health activity, with particular focus on promotion and support for sport as an important domain of social life. In 2017 pro-social activities of JZR comprised donations strictly to organizations from the immediate environment and local community.

  • CLP-B

    CLP-B conducted over ten editions of training on collecting and examining furnace ash for City and Municipal Guards and for local government representatives from 103 communities throughout Poland. Together with Wodzisławski county and Piastów Śląskich Technical School in Wodzisław Śląski the company conducts the project „Young employees are our future”, co-funded by the European Union under the European Social Fund. As a result, with the use of external funding, that contributes to social investments in future human resources. The company also organizes meetings for students and pupils. CLPB supported financially organizations important for community in Jastrzębie, incl. associations and sports clubs.

  • JSK

    JSK adopted Rules of conducting promotional and charitable activity in Jastrzębska Spółka Kolejowa Sp. z o.o., which focus above all on activities mitigating social risks related to the company’s core activity. Hence such actions as „Safe conduct on railway crossings”, contest „Safe Tracks”, participation in social campaign „Safe crossing”, or agreement with PKP PLK S.A. concerning participation in social campaign „Safe crossing – block the risk”. Cooperation was established with Jan III Sobieski School Complex No. 6 aimed at the development by the school of an innovative IT tool supporting the system of safety management in railway transport.

  • Advicom

    Advicom helps secondary school and university students to gain knowledge and improve their practical skills by organizing for them internships for students and graduates on the rules described in internal regulations. When possible, the company supports cultural and social events. In January 2017 the company supported financially School Sports Club Pionier in Jastrzębie Zdrój, which helped in the organization of a chess tournament, and supported financially the organization of the 40th anniversary of „Nautilus” sports club in Jastrzębie-Zdrój.

  • JSW Innowacje

    JSW Innowacje has huge potential to develop solutions relevant in social and environmental terms, including projects conducted jointly with academia and business. The company sponsored among others KS Jastrzębski Węgiel, and was strategic partner to International Maning Forum (IMF).
