Amendments to facilitation of coal mine methane capture signed by President

President Andrzej Duda signed amendment to the law on the functioning of the mining industry, which facilitates extraction of methane from phased out coal mines. The existing regulations do not allow for this activity in such mines and released methane was simply vented into the atmosphere. For JSW - beyond the economic aspect of the use of methane as the source of energy, it is essential also to ensure the safety of neighboring mining companies and environmental protection.

The amendment, which was established under the patronage of the Ministry of Energy, will allow for the removal of barriers and the elimination of threats to the safety and avoiding losses that are associated with the currently implemented restructuring measures including, inter alia, the disposal of mining plants or parts thereof to the Mines Restructuring Company S.A.

The change will also facilitate the acquisition and development of methane from closed mines and to change the current practice resulting from the capture of methane . At the same time it could be possible, to increase the income from sale of methane captured during the processes of mines closing.

- We have initiated these changes. So far, the existing regulations did not allow for this activity and the closure of plants apart from extinguishing  the license for coal resulted in the impossibility of obtaining an accompanying mineral,  the methane - says Tomasz Gawlik, CEO of JSW. - In our plants, which have advanced systems to acquire and economic exploitation of methane for energy production, expiry of the concession would entail the liquidation of modern installations, and  methane released directly into the atmosphere. Taking into account the JSW policy on environment and safety  - either their own plants or neighboring businesses - the possibility of further methane capture is extremely important - adds CEO of JSW.
