As part of the Company’s strategy, production goes hand in hand with competencies, and the quality of competencies depends on the people. Therefore, the Company’s strategy involves employing new well-educated personnel as well as investing in initiatives aimed at improving the qualification of its current employees. Achieving this goal is to be made easier by mining schools, where attracting young people, often from traditional mining families, would supplement the Company’s efforts aimed at achieving its production plans with another truly valuable element, i.e. the human factor, with benefits for the local communities.

Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa S.A. is the largest and highly valued employer in the region. The Company and the companies closely related to it play an important role in ensuring welfare stability of a large part of the region’s population. We work to provide our employees with the optimal conditions for their personal and professional development. Educating our employees is of great importance to us.

The main objectives of JSW S.A.’s personnel strategy include:

  • providing the Company with properly qualified specialists;
  • effectively and reasonably utilising the available human resources;
  • encouraging professional development of our employees through a career system, professional education and training.

Aware of the above and feeling socially responsible, we need to integrate the interests of the Company with the interests of the society in making our investment and development decisions.

This is reflected, among other things, in JSW S.A.’s commitment to:

  • investing in human resources and intellectual capital,
  • improving workplace health and safety, and
  • working to provide equal social opportunities.

Our employees are provided with a variety of benefits, including subsidised holidays, additional medical tests, training and courses to improve their qualifications, support parcels for sick employees, non-repayable financial support, and special gift parcels for our employees’ children on various occasions.

As part of those activities, we put great emphasis on the health of our employees. Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa provides comprehensive medical care far in excess of what it is required to provide. This includes access to specialist health programmes or to psychological assistance in accidents and other crisis situations.

Our employees identify with JSW S.A.
Good and safe working conditions are coupled with open communication to support employee awareness as strategic partners and their identification with the company. For several years JSW has been conducting image campaigns with the participation of our employees. Our employees appear in the Company's promotional videos and they are pictured in our corporate calendars. As a result of espousing this philosophy, our employees have become ambassadors and advocates of JSW S.A.'s values.

JSW S.A. also endeavors to enhance employee identification with the Group on an ongoing basis. In addition to the traditional miner's uniform, our employees enjoy the possibility of exhibiting how they identify with JSW by wearing various accessories bearing JSW's logo: ties, company pins, shirts and athletic jerseys.

Health and safety
Continuous improvement of occupational health and safety, protection of the health of our employees, ensuring appropriate levels of protection against threats and high levels of technical safety at our mines are the values that JastrzębskaSpółkaWęglowa considers its top priorities.

  • We continuously upgrade our production machinery and equipment. The Company’s management have for years been committed to ensuring that state-of-the-art mining technology is used in our production processes. Our mines are equipped with modern longwall units designed to work specifically in the mining and geological conditions of our mines and also tailored to the possible threats.
  • We work to ensure that our employees are aware of the appropriate attitudes that promote safety at work. We work to continuously improve the competencies and qualifications of our employees. At all of the Company’s mines, occupational health and safety knowledge competitions are held on a regular basis to promote safety at work and to increase our employees’ awareness of workplace safety. In 2010, JSW’s management decided to introduce an incentive system that rewards attitudes promoting safety at work.
  • We have developed a threat monitoring system. The system, which is designed to monitor and improve working conditions, has been successfully implemented at the Company’s mines. With the safety of our employees in mind, we are currently in the process of implementing an electronic monitoring system for identifying our employees working underground. Such a system is currently being put in place at KWK Pniówek.
  • Special emphasis is also placed on various health-promoting campaigns. In 2005, the scope of preventive medical tests for our employees was extended to include compulsory additional cardiovascular disease prevention tests to be taken by all our personnel. In addition, since 2010, psychological assistance has been available at each of the Company’s mines. The psychological assistance, which is available to all our employees, is provided to improve work safety at our mines.
