Our commitment to protecting the natural environment is the main part of the Company’s sustainable development strategy. It is also subject to strict regulations contained in the Environmental Policy of Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa S.A. and to the principles of our environmental management system certified to the ISO 14001 standard and implemented in 2005.

The commitments expressed in the strategic objectives contained in the policy are largely connected with our Company’s social responsibility and responsibility for the natural environment. Since the beginning of its operation, Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa S.A. has attentively and openly been monitoring and analysing significant social problems occurring in the Company’s environment. This is manifested in our attitude, dictated by our sense of responsibility, towards those whose lives may be affected by the Company. Therefore, our activities are not limited to our basic objects.

Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa is a mining company and, as such, cannot avoid the harmful effects of its operations. However, we are aware of our responsibility for the adverse impact of our business on the environment and we work to minimise the negative effects of our operations and, in many cases, considerably contribute to reclamation projects.

The objective of JSW S.A.’s environmental protection strategy is to reduce and minimise the negative impact of our mining production activity on the natural environment.

We wish to pursue and achieve this objective through the following:

  • discharging the underground salty water into the River Oder through the Olza water collection pipeline, thus reducing the negative impact of such water on surface water and complying with the applicable hydrotechnical protection requirements;
  • reducing the quantity of gangue (mining waste) in our mining processes and utilising it, to the largest extent possible, at our underground workings and on the surface, and using it to produce aggregates;
  • reducing our dust and gas pollution emissions into the atmosphere, with special emphasis on reducing greenhouse emissions;
  • minimising the impact of our mining operations on land surface;
  • repairing the civil engineering structures and buildings damaged by our mining operations;
  • reducing excessive noise emissions;
  • reclaiming and developing the areas of land used for our mining operations.
