Work on the U-SPACE program accelerates

A Polish technology company Hawk-e owned by the Jastrzebska Spolka Weglowa Group, will develop an unmanned flight management system to support growth of the market for services provided by unmanned aircraft.

Elements of the system will be used, among others, by the Polish Air Navigation Services Agency, an institution that ensures safety of air navigation in Poland’s airspace. The contract signed between Hawk-e and PANSA provides for measures related to the implementation of an innovative system ensuring safe movement of unmanned aircraft in Polish airspace in accordance with the assumptions of the “Warsaw Declaration” adopted in November 2016. It is another step towards the implementation of the U-Space concept, where the key elements are the UTM (Unmanned Traffic Management) and DTM (Drone Traffic Management) systems used for local management of BSP operations.

The European U-Space concept envisages a special airspace for drones in cities, but appropriate infrastructure must be built in order for many users to be able to use it safely. One of the issues is the necessity to ensure that drone traffic does not interfere with the classic manned flights. Implementation of the U-Space concept offers new growth opportunities to industrial, service and mining companies.

Hawk-e is a company established in mid-2018 to implement the effects of R&D projects in respect to unmanned technologies. It provides services, such as monitoring and spacial mapping of an area using drones and preparation of visual inspection analyses for the energy sector. It is also responsible for integrating and managing a test area for autonomous and automated systems. Hawk-e also takes part in the inter-ministerial programme named “Żwirko i Wigura” as an entity responsible for testing and developing technology solutions related to the development of U-Space. The UTM and DTM systems owned by the company are such solutions. The scale of its activity shows the great commitment of the company to the goal of building a safe airspace in Poland.

The Polish Air Navigation Services Agency (PANSA) is responsible for managing air traffic in the Polish airspace. It is the only institution in Poland that provides training to and employs civil air traffic controllers. Every day, they ensure safety of more than 2.5 thousand air operations taking place in the Polish airspace. PANSA builds and modernizes advanced aviation infrastructure that ensures safety of air traffic.
