Environment-friendly JSW

|   Odpowiedzialny biznes - wspólne

Honey from a Jastrzębie apiary – JSW’s new educational project addressed to the children and youths. In the Borynia Section an apiary was created to protect the useful insects while educating children. Protection of the environment and its resources is one of the priorities for the JSW Group.

The project is executed by the CSR Team of Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa and JSW Innowacje. It comprises comprehensive educational and practical activities. In August, an apiary was opened at the Borynia Section minesite. Starting from 1 October, local schools have been taking part in a City Game organized in Jastrzębie-Zdrój. As part of the project, children and youths can also write an article devoted to protection of bees and take part in a theme contest announced by National Geographic Kids.

The City Game is a competition for school groups prepared in the form of a paper chase. Pupils, under the care of a teacher, set out on the course and, using geographic clues, look for six illustrated boards describing tasks to perform. The whole course is approx. 3 kilometers long and the checkpoints are hidden in interesting city locations. This way the youths not only learn about bees but also get to know the history and geography of the nearest vicinity. The City Game is launched on 1 October and will last for the whole month. The completed tasks will be judged by the jury.

While working on the answers to the tasks participants may use educational aids. But the best form of preparation for the contestants will be a visit to the apiary. There, the young people will be able not only to learn of the habits of the bee colony and the hierarchy of the bee family but also find about the structure of the beehive and what bee products can be used for. The apiary also features an exhibition of posters from the locally and internationally acclaimed book entitled “Bees” by Wojciech Grajkowski, illustrated by Piotr Socha, published by the Dwie Siostry Publishing House.

The apiary will be opened till the end of October. So far 200 children have visited it. Visits to the apiary should be planned ahead and reported by phone to Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa’s CSR Team at 32 756 44 12 or 32 756 43 39 (individual and group visits). The wrap-up of the project and City Game award ceremony will take place in late autumn.
