Artificial intelligence for the mining industry

Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa and JSW IT Systems, a JSW Group company, launch cooperation with major IT industry players. A series of agreements on this matter was signed today in Katowice. Cooperation between the largest coking coal producer in the European Union with IBM, Microsoft and SAP is the way towards the future and implementation of the Mine 4.0 concept.

The JSW Group invited Microsoft to cooperate with JSW IT Systems in building the foundations for the Group’s digital transformation. The agreement between JSW and Microsoft was signed today in Katowice on the second day of International Mining Forum 2019, an international conference devoted to the future of the mining industry. The agreement provides for strategic cooperation, in which the JSW Group will use advanced Microsoft technologies. It assumes extensive cooperation in the area of knowledge exchange and development of joint projects based on Office 365, Dynamics 365 and Azure cloud solutions. They will concern, among others, management support systems, Internet of Things (IOT), processing of large data sets (BigData), advanced data analysis, blockchain, machine learning and artificial intelligence. Microsoft will provide technological support to specific business segments in the JSW Group: coal mining, production of coke, maintenance and repair services, IT and innovation, product and service sales.

- Modern industry and mining require the skills to extract the potential from technology. Digital transformation that is based on cloud computing opens up new opportunities for the JSW Group in data management and the use of advanced analytics mechanisms to create innovation and drive the company’s value for shareholders. As a result, it leads to increased staff productivity, improved efficiency of processes in the whole JSW Group and development of new services – says Magda Taczanowska, Enterprise Segment Director at the Polish Branch of Microsoft.

Through these cooperation efforts, the JSW Group will be able to implement business scenarios for, among others, creating a safe and effective work environment, in particular in the area of cyber security or predictive maintenance. They also involve energy demand forecasting and integration of solutions for the whole JSW Group. The agreement between the parties also provides for consulting, training and workshops, including a long-term vision of digital transformation and a design of digital workplaces for frontline employees and office workers in line with current trends, best market practices and current cyber security requirements.

- We are continuing our efforts to develop competences that can be used not only in JSW, but also in other Polish mining companies - said Daniel Ozon, President of the JSW Management Board, during the Forum. - Fiber optic cables and sensors provide us with a huge amount of information. As a result, we know, for example, where the crew is in emergency situations, we can also fully monitor the operation of our machinery.

That is why the cooperation between the mining giant and the IT companies is so important. During IMF 2019, JSW and JSW IT Systems also signed an agreement with IBM. According to its wording, the parties declared their intent to cooperate with respect to artificial intelligence-based solutions to support the operations of the JSW Group. This will involve the use of the latest IBM technologies to improve production, operational processes and increase automation. The cooperation will involve the use of the hybrid cloud computing model, artificial intelligence, analytics, statistics and big data management solutions. The results will include analytical support in the key decision-making process, elimination of weak points and building a mine of the future in accordance with the Industry 4.0 concept.

Another IT cooperation agreement is the tripartite letter of intent signed by Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa, JSW IT Systems and SAP Polska. It provides mainly for cooperation in the area of enterprise management solutions and integration of modern technology and IT areas. The substantive support of SAP Polska in defining the needs of JSW and JSW IT SYSTEMS will, among others, contribute to the improvement of processing of large amounts of data used in the mining industry. - Digital transformation and comprehensive approach to workplace optimization and data management are impossible without partners such as Microsoft, IBM or SAP. You just cannot do it without them – summarizes Piotr Toś, President of the Management Board of JSW IT Systems.
