Taking a hydrogen bus to Nikiszowiec

|   COP24 - wspólne

Students of one of schools in Katowice had the chance to travel on a hydrogen-powered bus. The vehicle that usually transports passengers in one of cities in the Netherlands, today appeared in front of the School Complex No. 1 in Katowice and took the students on a tour of the Nikiszowiec historic district.

During the COP24 climate summit held in Katowice in December, Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa presented a mobile hydrogen station and – with assistance from Ursus Bus SA – provided access to a hydrogen-powered bus. The company assumes that in the future, Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa’s coke plants will be able to produce gas to fuel 800 such vehicles annually. Hydrogen is a component of coke oven gas produced in the coke production process. It has to be separated and purified, but there is no doubt that it is worth it, because hydrogen used as a fuel in vehicles produces only water vapour. This is the main reason for the rising popularity of hydrogen buses in Europe.

Propagation of such vehicles in Poland will be an opportunity for the Company to supply hydrogen. It is estimated that a hydrogen bus running about 300 km a day uses about 8 kg of hydrogen per 100 km. Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa will promote hydrogen as a clean fuel of the future. Emission-free transport should be based not only on electric buses, but also on hydrogen-powered vehicles.
