Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa S.A. was established on 1 April 1993, one of seven coal companies founded at that time. It consisted of seven independently functioning mining companies, which were transformed into a state-stock company (a company wholly owned by the State Treasury).
Currently six mines belong to JSW S.A.: Borynia, Budryk, Jas-Mos, Krupiński, Pniówek and Zofiówka, as well as the Material Logistics Centre. The mines were constructed in the period 1963-1994 in response to growing demand for high quality coking coal. They conduct mining operations in the south-western part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin in the vicinity of Jastrzębie Zdrój, Żory, Knurów, Mikołów, Świerklany, Suszec, Pawłowice, Mszana, Godów, Orzesze, Ornontowice, Gierałtowice and Czerwionka-Leszczyny, covering a total area of 170 square kilometres. JSW S.A. has documented reserves of almost 530 million tonnes of coal. However, it plans to expand those reserves to 930 million tonnes of coal, which will enable it to maintain a strong position on international markets for a further 70 years.
Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa S.A. is the largest producer of hard coking coal in the European Union. The coal has high quality parameters and is mainly used in the production of top quality blast furnace coke. The largest customers for the coal from JSW’s mines are the domestic coking plants
Arcelor Mittal Steel Poland S.A., Koksownia Przyjaźń Sp. z o.o., Kombinat Koksochemiczny Zabrze S.A. and Wałbrzyskie Zakłady Koksownicze "Victoria" S.A. Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa also cooperates with international companies like Arcelor Mittal, U.S. Steel, Voestalpine.
Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa would like to extend its mines’ lifespan and maintain its position as market leader, so it needs to both invest in the construction of new mining levels in currently active mines and open up new deposits. These plans are part of the strategy of Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa, which provides for the extension of the two mines with the greatest potential – Zofiówka and Pniówek, by opening up and exploiting the new deposits Bzie Dębina 1 - Zachód and Pawłowice 1. The new deposits will be opened up in stages. JSW S.A. will start extracting the first coal from the new field of the Pniówek mine in 2012 and from the new field of Zofiówka in 2017. These investments will enable Pniówek to extract coal for approximately 65 years and Zofiówka for around 80 years.
The strategy for hard coal mining operations in Poland in the period 2007-2015 adopted by the Council of Ministers provides that the basic objective of planned transformations is to complete the process of creating a coal and coke group based on JSW S.A., which will account for a substantial portion of European coking coal and metallurgical coke production.
JSW S.A. currently holds shares in 16 commercial law entities, including 13 limited liability companies and three joint stock companies. It has a controlling interest in nine companies, in five of which it holds 100 per cent of the share capital. Major companies with capital affiliations with JSW S.A. include Koksownia Przyjaźń Sp. z o.o., Spółka Energetyczna "Jastrzębie" S.A., Jastrzębskie Zakłady Remontowe Sp. z o.o., Jastrzębska Spółka Kolejowa Sp. z o.o. and Polski Koks S.A. In the near future, the group will be expanded to include Kombinat Koksochemiczny Zabrze. The consolidation of a coal producer and producers and distributors of coke will create a powerful capital group with an established position on international markets.
